IMO adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI at the 76th session of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) held from 10 to 17 June 2021. Accordingly, ships of 400 gross tonnage and above engaged in international voyages1) shall comply with the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) as a technical measure to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and a new International Energy Efficiency (IEE) Certificate should be placed onboard. The amendments to MARPOL Annex VI are expected to enter into force on 1 November 2022(Effective date of IMO's amendment procedure), with the EEXI requirements coming into effect from 1 January 2023(Survey date for EEXI regulations).
